It functions as a primary high-affinity receptor for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Unlike the related VEGFR1, it does not bind to Placental Growth Factor (PlGF). The binding of VEGF to VEGFR2 triggers signaling pathways that promote the growth and proliferation of endothelial cells. Because of this central role, a recombinant soluble version of VEGFR2 is used as a potent VEGF antagonist to block its effects in diseases like cancer. |
