| Description: |
Complement Factor D, a serine protease, initiates the alternative complement pathway by cleaving factor B in the C3 complex. Highly expressed in adipose tissue as adipsin, it is uniquely specific, targeting only factor B in this context. Unlike most serine proteases regulated by zymogen activation or inhibitor binding, Factor D's activity is modulated by reversible conformational shifts. While its synthetic peptide activity is low, thioester substrates are commonly used to measure its activity. |
